Maggie took a taxi from Southwark across the river back to Saint Pancras. It would’ve been a twenty-minute jaunt if not for the laborious traffic—and she found her nerves frayed by the time she reached the station. It was late afternoon and because it was winter, bitter cold and already dark.

The face of Saint Pancras loomed up on the horizon like the stunning architectural phantasmagoria it was. Desolate and vaguely threatening more than majestic, Maggie thought.

Or perhaps that was just her mood today.

She’d succeeded in bullying money out of that oaf Surrey to help pay for Nuala’s legal bills, and she’d seen with her own eyes the daughter who would allow her mother to die alone and unloved in a foreign country.

And Maggie found it hard to dislike her.

All in all, especially with thoughts of Grace and Taylor and baby Bindy floating through her mind, when she thought of Claire it was with a feeling of sad acceptance.

She hurried toward the train station entrance. The dramatic arches and red brick facade of the famous train station—bombed in both the first and second wars and still not down for the count—hid a modern and vast new interior of aluminum and concrete, impressive in anyone’s book.

She hesitated outside the station, hoping to take a breath and try to center her mood and her feelings. A plaque on the closest wall of the station made her take a step closer and she read that the Saint Pancras churchyard on this site had been the primary burial ground for the whole of north London in the early 1800s including a group burial of paupers in mass graves.

Maggie shivered at the thought but couldn’t tear her eyes from the words on the building as people scurried past her in the cold, dark street.

It seemed that in order to construct the station and railway lines large parts of the burial ground had to be cleared. A side note showed that Thomas Hardy’s poem The Levelled Churchyard 1881 had to do with Saint Pancras.

Suddenly she was blinking back tears. She pulled a tissue out of her purse, unsure what to think about anything at the moment.

What had she actually learned on this trip?

While it was great that she’d managed to get Nuala some money, nothing was going to be as much help as that single clue that might help clear her.

Maggie turned away from the plaque with a feeling of moroseness. As she was turning she noticed out of the corner of her eye that someone was walking in her direction, close to the side of the station wall.

She looked up to see a shabbily dressed man with a cap pulled down low on his face shuffling directly toward her.

If he didn’t reroute his steps, he would run right into her.

Just as she began to step away to avoid him, she saw his hand hung loosely by his side.

And held a very big knife.
